Outdoor and Environmental Studies - Box Hill Senior Secondary School

Outdoor and Environmental Studies 1 - 2 (2017)

Outdoor & Environmental Studies focuses on the ways humans interact with outdoor environments. ‘Outdoor environments’ include environments that have minimal influence from humans, as well as those environments that have been subject to different levels of human intervention.

Outdoor & Environmental Studies teaches students to live sustainability and to understand the importance of environmental health, particularly in local contexts. Students gain practical knowledge whilst on camps in various environments through activities such as:

Unit 1 & 2- Bush walking, canoeing, mountain bike riding and high ropes.

Camps/activities enhance knowledge of environmental history, ecology and the social studies of human relationships with nature. The study also examines the complex interplay between human impacts on outdoor environments and nature’s impact on humans.

A major focus of the study is that outdoor environments provide space for connectedness with nature and opportunities for reflection upon the past, present and future.
